The Pinoy Wanderer: Subic Beach, Matnog, Sorsogon

Subic Beach in Matnog, Sorsogon has become one of the favorite beaches to visit in the Philippines. Located at the southernmost municipality of Sorsogon, Subic Beach is popular for its unique white pinkish sand and crystal clear waters. Not just a summer destination, this paradise in Calintaan Island, Matnog, Sorsogon is the perfect place for those who wants to enjoy nature, cool breeze, and pristine clear waters anytime of the year.

Whether you are driving to Matnog or using public transport, you need to drop by the Tourism Office located near Matnog Public Market so you can inform them of your presence. Safer this way, too. The office then will refer you to their accredited partner resorts and boatmen who will arrange your transport to the different destinations and activities in Subic Beach. If you are planning to stay overnight, or just renting a cottage for your day's stay, it is best to discuss them with your boatmen. Just be on your toes and learn to haggle so you can get the best deal. Anywhere in the world, there are people willing to take advantage of your kindness, so be nice without being a pushover. If you plan on being a regular and your boatman treated you right, you can ask for their contact information. Or you can ask referrals from your friends who've been to Subic Beach previously. Regular visitors can just call their contact persons directly and have their accommodations arranged ahead.

We planned to start early but arrived in Matnog past 11 am which is not good because then we won't have enough time to explore other parts of the island. Anyway, here are some photos while on our way to Subic Beach...

It was a clear sunny day, perfect for some beach adventure. After a short boat ride, we arrived at Subic Beach Laki (laki is Filipino for big) and rented a cottage to set up camp for our food and belongings. There's a smaller Subic Beach called Subic Beach Liit (liit is Filipino for small) which we weren't able to explore because there's just no time. Anyway, we brought prepared food with us and had some barbecue at the cottage for a more enjoyable beach experience. You may buy your vegetables, fish and meat at the nearby Matnog Public Market before your boat ride to Subic Beach if you want. Just clean after yourself and dispose your thrash properly when done with your cooking. Be sure to be a responsible tourist and leave no trace of your visit.

The sand is powdery fine and glistens in the sand. The pinkish hue of Subic Beach is because of the pulverized red and pink corals mixed with the white sand. Hugging the beach is its crystal clear water that's just so tempting. Take a look at some of the photos I took...

Exploring further on the right side of Subic Beach (towards the rock formation if you're facing the water), I found out that the sand in that part weren't as fine.

The beach on this side has some solid rock so be careful. Makes awesome photos though.

Corals and shells are still whole, a bit hard to walk on so I suggest you put on your flip-flops when exploring the beach.

The beach was great, the water was awesome, and with great company, a trip to Subic Beach is guaranteed a fun adventure. We didn't plan on staying overnight so before the sun sets, our boatmen informed us that it was time to leave.

We weren't able to explore everything Matnog has to offer. Full itinerary includes Tikling Island (another pinkish white sand beach), Subic Beach (Laki and Liit, both pinkish white sand beaches), Calintaan Cave (several scenic caves with rock formation and lush vegetation), and Juag Lagoon Marine Sanctuary (where you can do snorkeling and interact with rich marine life). Perhaps some other time then?
