Fat Tummy Cakes: A Project

Hey guys, what's up?  I've been away from blogging for quite some time, 3 years and 9 months to be more accurate, and a lot has happened since then.  After my dad's stroke in 2013 and while we were adjusting to a new lifestyle, my brother and I started a small business which took most of my time.  And then, just when things were beginning to look promising, in September 2016, my mom had a stroke too.  It drained me a lot emotionally, physically, and took a toll in our finances.  But with love, faith, and perseverance, we were able to survive.  From everything that has happened, we can learn that indeed health is wealth, and that we should teach ourselves to live a balanced life.  No matter what, life goes on and we should work harder for our goals.  Oftentimes, being passionate about something is what helps us cope.

This was the first order we received after our Fat Tummy page was launched on Facebook in December 2018.  Fat Tummy is our new baby.

Since I am now responsible for the well-being of my parents, I have to continually look for ways to earn while having fun at the same time.  And so last December 2018, out of the blue, my brother decided that we start baking cakes.  He had some training at a culinary school in Resorts World Manila and a year experience as pastry chef for a cruise ship in the United States.  Me, on the other hand, I'm creative and a fast learner.  And so that's how our Fat Tummy project started.

This is the current profile pic/logo of Fat Tummy on Facebook.  A slice of the cake Jeb made on his final exams at Genting. We called it 'chocolate revenge.'

Below was the cake my brother made last September 2018 for Auntie Nen's birthday.  It's a two-tiered naked buttercream vanilla cake decorated with fresh flowers.  At the time, our Fat Tummy project was not yet inspired.  Looking back, this cake is what encouraged us to pursue this Fat Tummy project.

When my niece learned that Jeb had baked a cake, she ordered a small cake for her daughter's birthday -- a pink cake she said, with flowers.  I helped pipe the flowers for this one (using royal icing), look how it turned out.  Not bad for a first timer.  This was the first paid cake that we made.

When we created the Fat Tummy page on Facebook and started telling people that we are now baking cakes, we received an order through my brother's messenger for a two-tiered Bumblebee fondant cake (refer to the first photo above).  That was officially our first order.  That same day, we got an order for another birthday, a two-tiered Minecraft themed birthday cake.  Our second order but the first fondant cake we made for a client.

We are just starting on this journey but the one thing my brother and I agreed on is that we should give our best to maintain an excellent quality for our cakes.  Two things:
  • creative and well executed design; and
  • great-tasting cake.

-- and that we should never compromise any of the two.  Here are more photos of the cakes we made since we started Fat Tummy.

For cakes with fondant icing, we use moist chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and mocha buttercream filling in the middle.  Most of the cakes we've made are fondant but we also use buttercream icing.  Here are some of our buttercream cake designs.

Our version of black forest cake.  It turned out really delicious, we were told.

Our creamy and chocolatey mocha-oreo cake.  Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and mocha buttercream filling, covered in mocha buttercream then topped with Oreo cookies.

Mocha-Oreo cake is actually a best seller for birthday celebrators in our neighborhood.

By the way, you might ask why FAT TUMMY?  Well, we've had a long list of suggested names but most were already taken -- and we couldn't pick one that my brother and I both like.  As he was standing by the window looking out thinking of names, I saw his, well, undeniably large belly.  When I suggested it, we both had a good laugh and agreed on the name Fat Tummy.  We're gonna do something about his fat tummy eventually.
