How to Cook Pork Siomai, The Pinoy Wanderer Style

Earlier today, Jeb and I got hungry.  We've gotten tired of fast food but we're not that keen to spend much just to satisfy our hunger.  So, we decided to cook a dish that's a common favorite, economical and something that we haven't prepared before.  We decided to cook -- (drum roll please) -- pork siomai!

Folks, this time, The Pinoy Wanderer will attempt to become a cook.  Disclaimer:  I can cook but I'm not really a cook.  I hope that made sense.  Besides, there's always Google, LOL!

Pork siomai (or steamed pork dumplings) is a very popular dim sum dish and a household favorite among many Filipinos.  I googled a recipe that looks easy enough to prepare and asked Jeb to buy the ingredients.  Here's the revised version of that Pork Siomai recipe:

Ingredients

For the pork siomai:
  • 1/2 kilo ground pork
  • 1 medium sized carrot, finely chopped
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup spring onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch or flour
  • 2 small pack Maggi Magic Sarap
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 pack siomai wrapper or wonton wrapper

 For the Chili Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup Chillies (Siling Labuyo), finely chopped
  • 1 pack Maggi Magic Sarap
  • 3 bulbs garlic, peeled and minced*
  • cooking oil

*According to our Landlord's help, siomai is best with lots and lots of garlic.

Cooking Instructions

Siomai Cooking Instructions:

Combine the ingredients in a bowl, mix well.  Put inside the fridge for at least 30 minutes.

After the specified time, prepare the siomai.  Use about 1 tablespoonful of siomai filling and put it on the center of a wrapper.  I'm sure you've seen how a siomai looks like, do your best to produce something like that.  And, be patient enough to finish all the prepared filling.  We sort of got tired after wrapping the fifth siomai. ☺

Note:  You don't really expect guys like us to own a steamer, right?  So, the best thing to do is call on the neighbor and borrow a steamer and other stuff that you might need.  Flash a sweet smile while you approach them.  Works every time!

Brush oil on a tray of steamer then arrange the siomai inside.  Be careful to allow some space between each to prevent them from sticking to one another.  Steam for about 25 - 45 minutes, or fry in cooking oil until soft brown.

Siomai Chili Sauce Cooking Instructions:

Simmer the chopped siling labuyo in bit of water to cook it.  After the water has drained, remove from pan.  Heat some oil and fry the minced garlic until golden brown.  Season with Maggi Magic Sarap.  Add the simmered siling labuyo and cook until the chillies look dry and cooked in oil.

Our very own pork siomai, cooked from scratch.  Hurrayyyy!

Serve your pork siomai with a soy sauce dip seasoned with calamansi and garnished with chili sauce.  Eat it any way you want.  See you guys on my next wandering!  Enjoy!
